Welcome to Year 5
Your teachers are Mr Birmingham and Mr Ball
It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces return to school this week. This is just a quick letter to outline some of the things you may wish to know.
We are starting the year with our topic ‘Ancient Wonders’. We have started this topic by finding out about the Ancient Egyptians and in the next few weeks, the children will be looking at pyramids, pharaohs and Ancient Egyptian beliefs.
For the first term, P.E. will be on Wednesday and Friday afternoon, so the children will need their P.E. kit on these days. Jewellery should be removed on these days, so please check that your child can remove any items of jewellery such as earrings independently.
Homework books will be given out next Friday with further instructions on how to complete it. The homework, unless we notify otherwise, will be due the following Wednesday. Although we are not setting any formal homework this week, we would encourage the following home activities:
- 1Reading and writing numbers to at least 1,000,000.
- 2Finding out some information about pharaohs and pyramids as a more in-depth understanding about these topics will help with writing over the next few weeks.
Most children have now been given a new reading book. We will be creating a rota ready for next week regarding when we check each child’s reading log. Reading regularly with your child is one of the best ways to help their academic development at school as reading underpins much of the curriculum.
Times Tables and Spelling
Spellings and Tables will be explained to the children next week and then to you in a letter next Friday. Tables tests will then take place on Tuesdays and spelling tests on Wednesdays.
Names on property
We will always try our best to make sure jumpers, coats and P.E. kit make there way back to the right child if it is misplaced. It makes our job a lot easier if every item of clothing has a name on the label. It would be very much appreciated if you could check this regularly so that we can make sure the items end up back home.
We would finally like to thank-you in advance for your support over the academic year. Please feel free to say hello to us or raise any questions or concerns. We will be at the door at the end of the day every day except Thursday, when Mrs Hewish and Mrs Andrews will dismiss the children.
